Some Things Friday for July 29, 2011

Some Things I Love:

1. Sarcasm.

2. Sitting outside on the back patio in the evening with a glass of wine, just chillin'. I miss it. It's just been too hot.

3. My 93-year old father-in-law is leaving for a two-week trip to California on Sunday. Tom is taking him to the airport and his dad would like us to pack a lunch for him to take on the plane, which should include a sandwich and cookie. He was very specific about including a cookie. I'll be baking oatmeal raisin cookies Saturday morning because he also specifically doesn't want a cookie made with candy (chocolate chips or m&m's). I'll send two cookies in his bag, just because I love him.

4. My oldest son and daughter-in-law finally closed on their first home and moved in! I can't wait to visit.

5. Yesterday I needed a laugh. This was in my twitter feed along with the link to the video: "Effin miss dis? A video dat'll make ya day...Truss me. No, effin serious... truss me." Warning: Language

Some Things I Hate:

1. The brutal heat. Starting in early June, the heat index has been well over 100 degrees every single day. Today we have a cool down. It's not supposed to hit 90 degrees, but the humidity is already 79%, so we are well on our way to a heat index of at least 100 degrees. Ugh.

2. When I forget to use a free-shipping offer code when I buy something online. It happened yesterday. Over a week ago, I received an email with a free-shipping offer for my next purchase at MexGrocer.com. Yesterday I ran out of a specific type of vinegar that I can only purchase through MexGrocer.com, so I ordered a couple of bottles later that afternoon. I forgot I had the coupon code and paid for the shipping! I hate it when I do that.

3. Auto-correct on my iPhone. I would like to know why my iPhone thinks when I type the word "to" that what I really mean is "Ro" and proceeds to change the word for me. What the hell is "Ro" anyway? It's not even a freakin' word.

4. When I go to a blog or a website and some kind of music or advertisement video starts playing automatically. I really do hate that!

5. Jane Fonda is selling a new book. She was going to make a QVC appearance to sell it there, but QVC apparently received a number of calls from protesters critical of Fonda's opposition to the Vietnam war and threatened to boycott QVC if they proceeded with Fonda's appearance, so QVC cancelled her segment. Folks, those protesters have serious issues. Hey, guys, have you heard? The Vietnam war is OVER and has been for more than 40 years! Geezuz...Get. Over. It.

Some Things I Just Don't Get:

1. The Tea Party members of Congress. They hate taxes. They hate government. Then why did they run for office? They now are part of the government. They are charged with governing. Of course, we can see the wonderful job their doing {dripping sarcasm}. People who hate the government should never be elected to run it. Those Tea Party members who are willing to allow our government to default do not deserve the offices they occupy.

2. Grandparenting classes. Apparently we need classes to remind us older folks that things were different back in the day and that we don't need to give our kids advice on child-rearing unless, of course, they ask. It's not rocket science. It's really simple. Our children are the parents of our grandchildren, which means they have the final say in raising their children. Our job is to keep our advice and criticisms to ourselves (our children are doing what they feel is best - just as we did when we raised them); love and support them consistently and help when asked; and spoil the little suckers when the opportunity arises. That is all.

3. Our city is proud to announce the grand opening of the new Golden Corral restaurant. It's a big deal. Not for me, but apparently for everyone else who lives here. I've never been in a Golden Corral and I probably won't patronize this one either. I've read they are offering an Asian buffet; an Italian buffet; a Mexican buffet and a seafood buffet, in addition to cooked-to-order steaks and a breakfast buffet on weekends. Wow. Could you ask for any more? Well, yeah, I could. Anyway, I happened to drive past the restaurant yesterday while I was running errands. First day. The parking lot was packed. Not a space anywhere. Yep, southerners loves them some buffet.

4. I read the instructions very carefully. I followed each and every step. No matter how many times I tried, my folded fitted sheet did not look like Martha's folded fitted sheet. Not even close. However, Martha's sheet looks like it's been ironed. That's where I draw the I'm-So-Martha line. Even if I won the lottery and employed a housekeeper or 4, I would NEVER iron sheets! What a waste of precious human and environmental energy!

5. This...

It is the 1,500 calorie Big Kahuna Donut Burger. I bet Paula Deen had her little butter fingers in this. Oh...as a matter of fact she did...

There is something drastically wrong with that woman.

I don't think I have a single argument.

Plus, your father-in-law and you sound like a match made in heaven.

And the tea-party crowd, the idiocy of what they're doing, not that they have a clue as to what they're actually doing, makes me choke.

Send me a cookie. With a free-shipping code.
